U.S. Speaker Mike Johnson discusses the intersection of Christianity and politics at Jackson Prep

Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson Shares Insight on Faith and Politics at Jackson Prep Event

Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson shared his personal side with a crowd of community members and students at an event at Jackson Prep on Thursday afternoon. Sponsored by the National Apostolic Christian Leadership Conference, the event aimed to support Christian political leaders in sharing their values with the public.

The event was attended by several notable guests within Mississippi government, including Sen. Cindy Hyde Smith, U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, former U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, and State Treasurer David McCray. Former Gov. Phil Bryant gave lively opening remarks before introducing Johnson, emphasizing the challenges facing the nation and the importance of leaders like Johnson.

Johnson’s speech, labeled as a “fireside chat,” emulated the approachable style of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s original fireside chats in the 1930s and 40s. Sitting on oversized chairs on the school’s auditorium stage, Johnson discussed his Christian values and how they inform his role as a politician.

Throughout his speech, Johnson emphasized the importance of faith in politics, citing the belief that rights are given by God, not by government. He also tied in current political issues, discussing the Bible’s teachings on borders and walls.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session featuring three Jackson Prep students and a closing prayer by Rev. David Tipton. The crowd responded with a final “amen,” showing their support for Johnson’s message of faith and leadership.
