Trump requests judge in Georgia election case to dismiss two additional counts against him

Former President Trump Seeks Dismissal of Two More Counts in Georgia Election Interference Case

Former President Donald Trump is making moves in his Georgia election interference case, as he seeks to have two more counts dismissed against him. In a court filing on Wednesday, Trump asked the judge to dismiss counts 15 and 27 of the indictment, which accuse him of conspiracy to commit filing of false documents and the filing of false documents.

The charges stem from allegations related to the so-called alternate elector plot, where Trump and other defendants are accused of mailing false documents to the chief judge of U.S. district court in Georgia, as well as filing a document with “materially false statements” in a federal lawsuit.

Trump’s attorneys argue that the state does not have the authority to prosecute conduct related to the federal government, claiming that the statute used in the indictment goes beyond the state’s jurisdiction. They assert that the state is overstepping its boundaries in attempting to enforce federal criminal law.

This latest development comes after the judge previously dismissed six counts in the indictment, three of which were against Trump. The former president now faces a total of 10 counts in the case, which stems from alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

Trump and 18 others pleaded not guilty to all charges last August, with some defendants taking plea deals in exchange for testifying against others. Trump has vehemently denied the allegations and has criticized the investigation as politically motivated.

As the legal battle continues, all eyes will be on the courtroom to see how this high-profile case unfolds.
