The SNP’s Performance in Westminster Reflects Ineffectiveness and Disappointment

Douglas Alexander Criticizes SNP’s Record in Westminster and Discusses Return to Politics

Douglas Alexander, the New Labour grandee, is making a dramatic return to frontline politics in Scotland with scathing criticism of the SNP’s record in Westminster. In an exclusive interview with Scotland on Sunday, Alexander described the SNP’s time in power as “a study in impotence and failure” and accused them of “trading in a currency of despair.”

Alexander, who served in the Cabinets of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, is standing in East Lothian, one of Labour’s top target seats in Scotland. He lost his seat in 2015 to Mhairi Black during the SNP’s historic landslide victory, leaving Labour with just one MP in Scotland.

The former MP highlighted the lack of progress in Scottish life since the SNP came to power in 2007, questioning the party’s legacy after 16 years in government. He emphasized the need for change and expressed his disappointment with the current political landscape in Scotland.

Alexander’s return to politics comes at a crucial time, with the upcoming general election presenting an opportunity for Scottish Labour to make gains. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed his determination to work for every vote in East Lothian.

The former politician also addressed the ongoing police investigation into the SNP’s finances, noting the impact it has had on former nationalist voters. He criticized the SNP for using a “language of hope” while trading in a “currency of despair” and highlighted the shifting political landscape in Scotland.

Alexander’s focus remains on winning the East Lothian seat for Labour, with the ultimate goal of contributing to a Labour government. He defended Sir Keir Starmer’s decisions and expressed his support for the party’s direction under his leadership.

As Alexander prepares for the upcoming election, his return to politics signals a renewed energy within Scottish Labour and a potential shift in the political dynamics of Scotland.
