Former President Trump Designated as Co-Conspirator in Michigan Fake Electors Case

In a recent development, former President Donald Trump has been designated as a co-conspirator in the Michigan fake electors case. This revelation came during a hearing where Howard Shock, a special agent for Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, named Trump, along with Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and Jenna Ellis, as co-conspirators in the scheme.

The probe charged 16 fake Republican electors from Michigan with attempting to subvert the 2020 presidential election in favor of Trump. While Trump has not been indicted in the case, the designation as a co-conspirator implies that prosecutors believe he was involved in the fake electors scheme.

According to reports from CNN and The Detroit News, Shock identified a total of 11 co-conspirators in the case, including Trump and his associates. The scheme was allegedly designed to convince Congress that Trump had won Michigan’s 16 electoral votes, which were actually won by President Joe Biden.

Representatives for Trump and Giuliani have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Key Background

Last year, Nessel charged the 16 false electors with election law and forgery felonies. The fake electors were accused of meeting in secret at the Michigan Republican party headquarters to sign certificates pretending to be qualified electors awarding Michigan’s electoral votes to Trump, after the election had been called for Biden. The charges carry sentences between five and 14 years.

Lawyers for the defendants have argued that their clients did not fully understand what they were signing and that Trump campaign advisers organized the false certificate. While Trump faces charges in Georgia for attempting to overturn his election loss in the state, trial dates for these cases have not yet been established.
