Pennsylvania House grants county election officials’ extension to tally mail-in ballots

Pennsylvania House Passes Bill Allowing Early Processing of Mail-In Ballots for 2024 Election

The 2024 presidential election in Pennsylvania is already making headlines as the state House passed a bill allowing county election workers to start processing mail-in ballots up to a week before Election Day. The legislation, known as House Bill 847, was met with opposition from Republicans in a party-line vote of 102-99.

The bill, proposed by State Rep. Scott Conklin, extends the period for opening and scanning mail-in ballots, addressing concerns raised by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania. This move aims to improve the election experience for both counties and voters without compromising ballot security.

Under the proposed bill, election workers would be able to open and scan mail-in ballots in secrecy envelopes up to seven days before Election Day. However, the tabulation of results would only occur after polls close and would be witnessed by representatives from each candidate and party. Strict measures would be in place to prevent the disclosure of results before the conclusion of in-person voting.

The push for early processing of mail-in ballots comes in response to the delays in counting mail-in votes during the 2020 election, which led to uncertainty and fueled conspiracy theories. Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his support for the bill on social media, urging the Senate to follow suit and pass the bipartisan reform.

While the bill has garnered bipartisan support, some Republican lawmakers have raised concerns about the overlap it creates for election workers and have called attention to other election-related issues in the state. Despite the opposition, proponents of the bill emphasize the importance of timely election results to combat misinformation and restore trust in the electoral process.

As Pennsylvania gears up for the 2024 election, the debate over early processing of mail-in ballots highlights the ongoing efforts to improve election procedures and ensure a smooth and transparent voting process for all citizens.
