Pennsylvania House Passes Bill Allowing Early Processing of Mail-In Ballots for 2024 Election

The 2024 presidential election in Pennsylvania is already making headlines as the state House passed a bill allowing county election workers to start processing mail-in ballots up to a week before Election Day. The legislation, known as House Bill 847, was met with opposition from Republicans in a party-line vote of 102-99.

The bill, proposed by State Rep. Scott Conklin, extends the period for opening and scanning mail-in ballots, addressing concerns raised by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania. Under the proposed bill, election workers would be able to open and scan mail-in ballots in secrecy envelopes up to seven days before Election Day. Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his support for the bill on social media, urging the Senate to follow suit and pass the bipartisan reform.
