PA Primary Results: Unexpected Victory Shocks Voters

Pennsylvania Row Office Primary Elections: Surprising Results and Low Turnout

The recent Pennsylvania row office primary elections saw unexpected outcomes that left voters and political observers surprised. In a low-information environment, factors such as location, reputation, demographics, and luck seemed to matter more than policy differences.

One of the major upsets was in the Democratic race for state treasurer, where Erin McClelland, a small businessperson, defeated party-endorsed state Rep. Ryan Bizzarro. Despite being outspent almost 15:1, McClelland’s statewide name recognition and regional appeal helped her secure a 54% to 46% victory.

In the crowded Democratic attorney general field, former Auditor General Eugene DePasquale emerged victorious with nearly 36% of the vote, beating out his opponents who had more cash on hand. DePasquale’s previous statewide office wins and support from central and western Pennsylvania voters played a significant role in his success.

The Republican row office races were less contentious, with uncontested GOP incumbents seeking reelection. In the contested GOP primary for attorney general, Dave Sunday, the York County district attorney, easily defeated state Rep. Craig Williams with 70% of the vote.

Overall, the primary elections highlighted the influence of regionalism, name recognition, and gender in shaping voter decisions. With turnout low and voters feeling unprepared and uninspired, unexpected outcomes and upsets were seen across the board.

As the candidates gear up for the general election, they are already previewing their messaging and focusing on issues such as protecting democracy, women’s rights, and addressing key challenges facing Pennsylvania. The upcoming November elections are expected to see increased interest and engagement as the presidency hangs in the balance.
