Arizona Fake Electors Indicted for Certifying Trump 2020 Win

The Arizona political landscape was rocked on April 24, 2024, when news broke that an Arizona grand jury had indicted 11 Republican “fake electors” and seven allies of former President Donald Trump for falsely certifying Trump as the winner of the 2020 election. The indictments, announced by Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, implicated a group of individuals who conspired to keep Trump in office despite losing the election.

Among the indicted fake electors were prominent figures such as Republican National Committeeman Tyler Bowyer, former Arizona Republican Party executive director Greg Safsten, and former AZ GOP chair Kelli Ward. Additionally, seven other Trump allies, including attorney Jenna Ellis and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, were also indicted but not named at the time.

The reaction on social media was swift and divided along party lines. Republicans like state Sen. Jake Hoffman and the Arizona Republican Party decried the indictments as politically motivated, while Democratic leaders like Rep. Ruben Gallego and Maricopa County Board of Supervisors member Steve Gallardo applauded the decision to hold the fake electors accountable.

The indictments shed light on the lengths to which some individuals went to perpetuate the false narrative of election fraud and undermine the democratic process. As the legal process unfolds, the implications of these indictments on Arizona’s political landscape remain to be seen.
