Meijer Drops Out of Senate Race, Aiyash Decides Not to Run for Another State House Term in Michigan

Michigan Primary Election Field Narrows After Friday’s Withdrawal Deadline

Michigan’s Aug. 6 primary election field has slimmed down after Friday’s withdrawal deadline, with the most significant change occurring in the race for the U.S. Senate seat up for grabs. Former U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Grand Rapids) has exited the GOP primary race, leaving former U.S. Reps. Mike Rogers (R-White Lake) and Justin Amash (I-Cascade Twp.), physician Sherry O’Donnell, and businessman Sandy Pensler in the Republican race.

Meijer cited the changing dynamics of the race as the reason for his withdrawal, stating that continuing his campaign would only lead to a divisive primary that could detract from conservative victories in November. Meijer’s decision comes after facing backlash from Republicans for his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump in 2021.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly), actor Hill Harper, and businessman Nasser Beydoun remain in the race for the U.S. Senate seat. In other congressional races, there have been withdrawals and changes in candidates, including Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley withdrawing from the Democratic primary in the 8th District.

In the Michigan House of Representatives races, there have been notable withdrawals and changes, with House Majority Floor Leader Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck) withdrawing from the race for the 7th District to maintain eligibility for a potential run for the Michigan Senate in the future. House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) and other candidates are also facing shifts in their races.

Overall, the withdrawal deadline has reshaped the field for Michigan’s upcoming primary election, setting the stage for a competitive and dynamic political landscape in the state.
