Lawsuit against assisted living home and controversial remarks by Hovde on nursing homes spark debate in Wisconsin

Assisted Living Home in California Owned by U.S. Senate Hopeful Eric Hovde’s Bank Cited for Violations and Named in Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Assisted living home in California linked to U.S. Senate hopeful Eric Hovde’s bank cited for violations

An assisted living home in California connected to the bank owned by Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Eric Hovde has been cited for a series of violations, according to records with the state of California. Claremont Hacienda in Los Angeles County, which is part-owned by Sunwest Bank owned by Hovde, has also been named in a wrongful death lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed by the daughter of a former resident, alleges that the home failed to provide proper care, leading to the resident’s death. In addition to the lawsuit, state records show that Claremont Hacienda has been cited multiple times by the California Department of Social Services and fined $4,500.

Hovde, who is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin for re-election, has faced criticism over the lawsuit and his recent comments about voting by residents of nursing homes in Wisconsin. Democrats have seized on these issues to attack Hovde, with some linking the lawsuit to his remarks about nursing home voters in the 2020 election.

Hovde’s spokesman has stated that neither the bank nor Hovde are involved in the day-to-day operations of the assisted living home, which is managed by another company. Hovde has dismissed the lawsuit as “manufactured” and criticized media coverage of the issue as a “hit job.”

The California Department of Social Services’ records reveal a pattern of violations at Claremont Hacienda, including issues with medication storage, staff qualifications, and training records. The facility has been fined for failing to address these citations.

Hovde’s comments about nursing home voters in Wisconsin have also drawn scrutiny, with Democrats accusing him of disregarding seniors’ rights. Hovde has defended his remarks, citing concerns about the validity of votes cast by elderly residents in nursing homes.

As the Senate race heats up, the controversy surrounding Claremont Hacienda and Hovde’s bank ownership continues to be a focal point for both parties. Democrats are using the issue to question Hovde’s commitment to senior care, while Hovde maintains that the allegations against him are politically motivated.
