Noem, who is also the governor of South Dakota, shared in her memoir that she had to put down an “untrainable” dog named Cricket on her family farm. She described the dog as behaving like a “trained assassin” and being dangerous to anyone it came in contact with. Noem explained that the dog had ruined a hunt and attacked chickens owned by a local family, leading her to make the difficult decision to euthanize it.
In addition to the dog, Noem also mentioned in her memoir that her family owned a male goat that was aggressive and had not been castrated. She described the goat as “nasty and mean,” stating that it would chase her children, knock them down, and ruin their clothes. Noem decided to handle the goat in the same way she had dealt with the dog.
The excerpts from Noem’s memoir have drawn criticism from various groups, including the Democratic Party and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The Democratic National Committee condemned Noem’s actions as “horrifying” and “disturbing,” while PETA called her decision to kill the dog unacceptable and lacking compassion.
Despite the backlash, Noem defended her actions, stating that tough decisions like these are common on a farm. She emphasized that she loves animals but sometimes difficult choices have to be made.
Noem’s book, titled “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” is set to be published in the US on May 7. Reports suggest that she is being considered as a potential vice presidential running mate for Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
