House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has announced that articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will be sent to the Senate on April 10. This move comes after the House impeached Mayorkas last month on two counts, accusing him of failing to comply with and enforce existing law, along with a breach of public trust.

Johnson, along with 11 Republicans selected as impeachment managers, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., urging him to hold a trial “expeditiously” once the articles are presented. The House GOP’s impeachment effort is in response to Mayorkas’ handling of the crisis at the U.S. southern border.

Senate Republicans have called for Schumer to proceed with the trial, although it is unlikely to result in a conviction. Schumer has not indicated his plans but has criticized the impeachment bid publicly, raising the possibility that he may move to dismiss the trial with a simple majority vote.

The impeachment of Mayorkas marks the first time since 1876 that a cabinet secretary has been impeached. The Senate must act swiftly once the articles are formally handed off, with Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray set to preside over the trial.

The ongoing impeachment proceedings have sparked intense debate and negotiations within Congress, with House GOP leaders delaying the transmission of the articles to the Senate to avoid disrupting the government funding process. Despite the delay, Johnson emphasized the importance of holding Mayorkas accountable for his actions.

As the impeachment process unfolds, the nation awaits the outcome of this historic event that could have far-reaching implications for the Department of Homeland Security and the handling of immigration issues at the border. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
