Inflation remains a top concern for Wisconsin voters

Inflation in Wisconsin: Grocery Prices Rise Faster than Nationwide

The price of groceries has risen faster in Wisconsin compared to the nationwide average, with prices increasing by 4.2% since January 2021, as opposed to the 1.7% increase seen across the country. This trend has added to the concerns of Wisconsinites, who continue to grapple with the impact of inflation on their daily lives.

Despite a significant reduction in inflation rates nationwide, with a drop from 9% to 3.5% since mid-2022, Wisconsin residents are still feeling the pinch of rising prices, particularly when it comes to essential items like groceries. A recent survey conducted by WisconSays/La Follette revealed that 63% of respondents consider inflation to be a major problem, with those facing financial challenges feeling the impact even more acutely.

The survey also highlighted the disproportionate impact of inflation on food insecure individuals, with 50% of them categorizing inflation as an “extremely big problem.” This sentiment is echoed by consumers who tend to feel the effects of price increases more than decreases, indicating a general dissatisfaction with elevated price levels.

While the overall economic outlook for Wisconsin remains positive, with steady employment growth and rising incomes, there are still disparities in how different demographic groups perceive the state of the economy. Lower-income households, despite experiencing faster increases in hourly earnings, continue to view the economy more pessimistically compared to higher-income brackets.

Interestingly, the survey found that there is no partisan divide in how Wisconsinites perceive the state’s economic conditions, in contrast to the national level where political affiliations often shape economic perceptions. This unity in economic outlook reflects the overall strength of Wisconsin’s economy and its resilience in the face of inflationary pressures.

Looking ahead, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue’s latest forecast predicts continued employment growth and increases in real personal income and GDP growth, signaling a positive trajectory for the state’s economy. Despite ongoing concerns about inflation, the overall economic landscape in Wisconsin remains robust, offering hope for a brighter future for all residents.
